1 March 2017, Kuta-Bali, Indonesia: The Rip Curl School of Surf in cooperation with the International Surfing Association are delighted to announce the third annual ISA Surf and SUP Instructor Symposium, to be held again in Bali, Indonesia from the 7th to 22nd of June 2017.
The symposium will offer ISA Surf Level 1 Instructor, Surf Level 2 Coach and Flat Water SUP Instructor training programs, a Lifeguard Surf Rescue course by the Balawista (Bali’s Lifeguard Department) and the Practical Coaching Course that is necessary to accumulate the required teaching certification hours.
The schedule will be divided into ISA Surf Level 2 on 7-9 June, ISA Surf Level 1 from 10-19 June, and 12-21 June for ISA SUP Flat Water Instructor training programs. This year you can also join the dual programsof either ISA Surf Level 1 and SUP Flat Water or ISA Surf Level 2 and SUP Flat Water.
Australia’s Jamo Borthwick will be the keynote speaker and presenter forthe ISA Surf Level 1 and 2 training programs at the symposium. In addition to being an ISA Surf Level 2 Coachand Presenter, Borthwick owns the Walking on Water Surf School, is a licensed provider of Surf Life Saving Queensland accreditation and qualification courses, and is coach to a number of junior and upcoming local surfers on the Gold Coast of Australia.
The presenter for the Flat Water SUP program will be Jonni Deaker, an avid and experienced paddle board rider who has been paddle coaching for 9 years in Bali. Jonni is also the Starboard Indonesia representative and enjoys all the different disciplines of stand up paddle boarding and will no doubt have the program participants test their skills on the race boards and surf SUP’s during the program as well.
As the epicenter of surfing in the SE Asian region, the island of Bali is the perfect location to host such an event, not only for its surf and beaches but also its accessibility, with an international airport and well developed tourism facilities.
And the Rip Curl School of Surf provides the ideal locations and facilities for the practical part of the symposium, as it has one location just steps away from the sand on the west coast of Bali in the Double Six Beach area of Legian, and the second on the east coast at the Prama Sanur Beach in Sanur, both of which are surrounded by hotels, restaurants, and entertainment options for the attendees. Surf Level 1 and 2 classroom sessions will be held at Rip Curl Bali Headquarters on Sunset Road, while theFlat Water SUPclassroom sessions will be held at the Prama Sanur Beach Hotel.
There is a significant need for the complete training of surf and SUP instructors here in Bali and all around the Asian region as these sports grow, but often there is no regulation and minimal opportunities for proper training, which is inherently dangerous as the many of surf schools, surf camps, and independent individuals hire staff who often have no formal training or life saving skills to look after the beginning students.
Bali’s Tourism Department is actively supporting the symposium and will be in attendance as well, for they are currently in the process of setting standards for commercial surfing activities on the island in cooperation with the Bali Lifeguard Department.
The combined ISA Surf Level 1 Instructor and SUP courseis offered at $1,120 USD (Rp 15.12 million at today’s exchange rate), the combined Surf Level 2 Coach and SUP course is $1,000 USD,and the Level 1 Surf and SUP Flat Water courses are each $700 USD (Rp 10.5 million),and the Level 2 Surf is $550 USD (Rp 7.43 million). Included is all the printed ISA course materials, transportation to and from the classroom to facilities in Sanur and Legian, a certified surf rescue program from the Bali Lifeguards Association for Surf level 1 and Flat Water SUP, 12 months ISA registration, 20 hours of instructor training supervised by a ISA representative for Surf Level 1 and Flat Water SUP, lunch each day as well as coffee and water.
Surf instructors already certified by another organization can sign up for a transition course that provides the necessary knowledge and skills to become certified by the ISA.
